Mildura Rural City Council is boosting Victoria’s capacity to process more glass domestically and strengthening our state’s recycling system – thanks to funding aimed at supporting infrastructure development from the Victorian and Federal Governments.
Mildura Rural City Council is one of six organisations and businesses across the state that will share in more than $8.1 million to build new or upgrade existing recycling facilities across the state – through the Victorian Government’s Recycling Victoria Infrastructure Fund – Materials program and the Australian Government’s Recycling Modernisation Fund.
Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp MP today congratulated Mildura Rural City Council which received a $228,750 grant towards the construction of a new regional glass sorting and processing facility with a capacity to process up to 7.5k tonnes of kerbside glass per annum.
This potentially represents a 4% increase on Victoria’s current domestic processing capacity. The removal of glass from Mildura’s co-mingled recycled waste is forecast to significantly reduce the volume requiring transport to Melbourne – reducing environmental impacts and overall cost to the council and ratepayers.
The $947,000 project will be complete in July 2022 and will support three full time ongoing jobs.
The projects supported by a joint investment by the Victorian and Commonwealth governments, will be able to process 205,000 tonnes of glass and 23,000 tonnes of plastic every year, enabling industry and councils to turn more recycled glass into jars, bottles and fibreglass, and plastic into bottles and containers — or used in the construction of new roads and footpaths.
This will more than double the state’s domestic recycling of glass and boost its domestic plastics recycling by almost 40 per cent while creating more than 70 new jobs.
The Victorian funding is part of Recycling Victoria – the $380 million 10-year plan to transform the state’s recycling sector, create thousands of jobs and set Victoria up for a more sustainable future.
