Shepparton racegoers are set to enjoy a big night of harness racing at the Gold Cup on Saturday, 28 April, thanks to a joint funding package of more than $26,000 supported by the Andrews Labor Government.
Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp today announced the Andrews Labor Government is providing more than $12,000 from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund to support the race meeting, as well as for thermal imaging to check the track’s electrical systems.
The Gold Cup event was previously scheduled for January, but was postponed due to an electrical fault at Shepparton Harness Track.
The highlight of the rescheduled night will be the Group Two Shepparton Gold Cup, which is run over 2,690 metres and features $50,000 in prize money. Harness racing personalities Rob Auber and Rod Booker will be calling the races and conducting trackside interviews throughout the event.
As well as an array of entertainment, half-price discount dining packages will be available for patrons with bookings from the cancelled January meeting.
Youngsters will also be included in the fun, with pony rides, a petting zoo and a giant jumping castle on hand on the night.
Complimentary buses will take racegoers safely to and from the track, operating via Shepparton’s Royal Mail Hotel, the Civic Centre carpark, Sherbourne and the Shepparton Club. A second bus will go via Deakin Reserve, the Aussie Hotel and the Peppermill.
Shepparton Harness Racing Club is contributing more than $12,000 to the race night, while local businesses and volunteers are providing more than $1,000 of in-kind support. Harness Racing Victoria is contributing almost $700 towards the thermal imaging project at Shepparton Harness Track.
Since 2014, the Labor Government has provided more than $35,000 to support two infrastructure projects and two harness racing events in Shepparton.
The racing industry in the Goulburn region generates more than $227 million for the Victorian economy annually, and helps sustain more than 2,240 full-time equivalent jobs locally.
