Mildura will get its own taste of the Melbourne Cup as part of an $80,000 joint funding package supported by the Andrews Labor Government.
The Labor Government is providing almost $30,000 from its Victorian Racing Industry Fund Raceday Attraction Program for this year’s 2018 Melbourne Cup Day event on Tuesday 6 November at Mildura Racecourse.
With 2500 people expected to flock to the track, the feature race on the day will be the Mallee Cup with the winning trophy resembling the three-handled Melbourne Cup carved from a mallee root.
A big screen will be on-course to ensure patrons have full view of the day’s action from Flemington Racecourse and live music will be provided by locals Steve Coghill and Jesse Curran.
Racegoers will also be entertained with a ‘Fashions on the Field’ competition, punters club, and sporting club challenges.
Kids will be kept amused with a range of free activities, including a rock climbing wall, bungee trampoline, jumping castle, laser tag skirmish, face painting, and a wildlife show.
A range of hospitality packages are on offer, including the all-inclusive Mallee Cup Marquee option hosted by former AFL player Mick McGuane, with all patrons receiving complimentary gift packs.
Free shuttle buses will operate from the Mildura city centre and the racecourse to ensure that racegoers can get safely to and from the track.
Mildura Racing Club is providing almost $47,000 towards the race meeting and Country Racing Victoria is contributing $4000.
Since 2014, the Labor Government has provided almost $144,000 to support seven infrastructure projects and three race day events at Mildura Racecourse.
The racing industry in the Mallee region generates more than $58 million for the Victorian economy annually and helps to sustain more than 570 full-time equivalent jobs.
