Digital connectivity is more important than ever, with the coronavirus pandemic seeing more Victorians work from home than ever before.
Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp MP today visited KidsTown Adventure Playground in Shepparton to officially announce that more residents, visitors and businesses across Greater Shepparton will have access to one of Australia’s smartest and most advanced free WiFi services.
The Victorian Government has invested $1.2 million with the Greater Shepparton City Council partnering with Telstra to improve the fibre network across the region and boost digital access for residents with reliable and high-speed internet.
Building on existing free WiFi services already available in the Shepparton CBD, the project has expanded the network to towns across the greater Shepparton region, including Toolamba, Tatura, Mooroopna and Murchison.
With Victoria now free of travel restrictions, the free WiFi network will boost the region’s visitor economy and enhance digital inclusion throughout Greater Shepparton connecting people in places where residents gather including sporting venues, event spaces, community facilities, YouthSPOTs, parks and reserves.
The expanded free WiFi network is part of the Victorian Government’s $45 million Connecting Regional Communities Program which is addressing key digital issues throughout regional Victoria, including free public WiFi and enhancing broadband networks.
The Victorian Government is bridging the digital divide, with Greater Shepparton joining Geelong in expanding their free WiFi networks through the program, building on existing public WiFi services in Melbourne and the Ballarat and Bendigo CBDs.
Digital connectivity has been identified as a key priority across regional Victoria, helping create opportunities for businesses to boost economic recovery and create jobs across the state – driving social and economic participation.
