Racegoers are set to flock to the Swan Hill Racecourse this Saturday for the region’s premier harness racing event, thanks to $50,000 of funding supported by the Andrews Labor Government.
Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp today announced the Labor Government is providing more than $21,000 to help support the event, courtesy of its Victorian Racing Industry Fund Raceday Attraction Program.
Mr Gepp said “The Swan Hill Pacing Cup is one of the premier events on the Mallee racing and social calendar, and we’re delighted to be supporting what promises to be a fantastic community event.”
Held at one of the fastest harness racetracks in Australia, the 2017 Swan Hill Pacing Cup is expected to draw a crowd of more than 2000 people.
“Regional racing events play a critical role in boosting local economies and helping to generate jobs by attracting valuable tourism and visitors to Victoria’s northwest,” said Mr Gepp.
Racing media personality and Harness Racing Victoria ambassador Larne Salathiel will headline the entertainment as this year’s special guest.
Live music will also feature as part of the trackside entertainment, while free shuttle buses ensure that patrons can get safely to and from the track.
The event will also include a variety of children’s activities including a jumping castle and performances from a roving clown.
The Swan Hill Trotting Club is contributing more than $13,500 towards the event, with Harness Racing Victoria providing $8,500 and generous locals donating $6,700 worth of in-kind support.
Since December 2014, the Labor Government has provided more than $185,000 to the Swan Hill Trotting Club, including almost $135,000 to support five infrastructure projects and more than $50,000 for four Raceday Attraction Program initiatives.
The racing industry in the Mallee region generates more than $58 million annually for the Victorian economy and helps sustain more than 570 full-time equivalent jobs locally.
